Graphic designing is not rocket science, although it is something that is broad and something that is a definitely a skill to acquire for those who have interest in the field. Graphic design is the method of communicating via visual means, and also solving problems through the use of space, type, and imagery.

Graphic designing is considered to be in a subgroup under the broad industry of visual communications and communication design, which are the recently upcoming fields and which are the fields beaming with university course applications lately. Graphic designing is a group that comes in between these two fields and it is used rather interchangeably for different purposes when talking about either visual communications or communication design.

Either way, if you are interested in graphic designing or are looking into graphic designing for purposes related to your work or business, then there are some things that you should start learning about it. The first step to becoming a successful graphic designer is to be able to pick up the terminology used within the graphic design world, that is why we have listed four of our most important key terms!

Image format

Here we will be talking about Rasta images and Vector images. Rasta images, also sometimes called bitmap images, are actually images made up of thousands of tiny pixels which would be deciding the color and the form of the image. For example, photographs are bitmap or Rasta images. Adobe Photoshop is the easiest to use Rasta image editor where you can change the colors of each pixel and can resize them. Resizing the pixels can be rather hard. If you try to make the dimensions bigger over Adobe Photoshop, then the software has to make up for the data in order to add the size. This results in a loss of quality.

Vector images are those that you create over software like Adobe Illustrator. These images are made up of points instead of pixels, which have a definite X and Y co-ordinate. These points can join paths to make shapes. The color fills are added to the insides of these shapes. Since most parts of the images revolve around this idea, you can resize vector images as and how you like without having any compromise in quality or data. For this purpose, vectors are used to create logos and all for graphic designing as they can be resized without a problem. With the advancements in vector image technology, you can even add gradients, have difficult and complex shapes and create more detailed images which can be made bigger easily.

CMYK stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Key and these are the standard color set for sending in documents. Any kind of documents ranging from newspapers, magazines and other annual reports which are sent to the printer would work on this color range. Key basically means black because, in key, the colors are aligned straight and carefully to produce that effect in the printer. When you print you can also add something called the Pantone, which is the fifth element that can work with more colors and add more plates while you print.

The other color range called RGB has a broader and wider color spectrum that you can work with. You can choose to work with either in Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator but since CMYK is something that is less broad in spectrum, which you choose to work with CMYK and later transfer your work and want to make it RGB then you might face some losses and color changes which need to be manually edited for one by one.

DPI means dots per inch and PPI means pixels per inch. These two terms basically work on the idea of resolution. Usually, the one which causes the most concern is DPI and the more dots per inch, the better the image resolution and quality. The standard DPI for printing images tends to be about 300DPI. PPI comes into the picture if you resize images to make it bigger for example on Photoshop, and thus you have to add more pixels to them.

This is simply the art of arranging type, letters and/or other symbols. This is one of the basics of graphic designing and one thing that each and every graphic designer should know about in much, much detail! There is a difference between having a good type and having a bad type. This is an important factor that distinguishes bad design from good design. If you are interested in graphic designing, then it would definitely be worthwhile to spend enough time to learn how to use typography and implement it properly in your designs.
